Why Range Distances Don't Work

How to Collect Accurate Data
Use a GPS watch or rangefinder on course
Before each approach shot, note the exact distance to the flag or front of green. After the shot, note where the ball landed relative to the target. The difference is your carry distance.
Record only solid strikes
Skip the mishits, tops, and chunks. You want the distance you produce with reasonable contact — not perfect, not terrible. If you'd describe the strike as "decent" or better, record it.
Log at least 10 data points per club
Five shots isn't enough — one outlier skews the average. Ten or more data points smooth out the variation and give you a reliable number.
Calculate your average carry for each club
Add all recorded carry distances for that club and divide by the number of shots. This is your working distance.
Note your dispersion range
Record your longest and shortest carry for each club. The range between them tells you how consistent you are — and helps with club selection when trouble exists.

Notice the gaps: 20 yards between driver and 3-wood, 13 between irons, 15 between wedges. Consistent, manageable, and most importantly — real.
Using Your Chart on the Course
Once you have accurate distances, the club selection process becomes mechanical:
Measure your distance (rangefinder or GPS).
Adjust for conditions (wind, elevation, temperature, lie).
Pick the club whose average carry matches the adjusted distance. Not the club that reaches it on your best swing. The one that reaches it on your average swing.
When in doubt, take more club. Your chart shows a range for each club. If your 7-iron averages 155 with a range of 148-163, and the shot is 157, you're at the high end of 7-iron territory. Take the 6-iron and make a smooth swing.
Partial Shot Distances
Your chart should also include partial swings for your wedges. These are the shots that create birdie opportunities.
For each wedge, establish three distances:
- Full swing: Your normal, committed swing
- Three-quarter swing: A smooth, controlled motion with abbreviated follow-through
- Half swing: Hands to approximately waist height
Example for a gap wedge (50°):
- Full: 103 yards
- Three-quarter: 88 yards
- Half: 70 yards
These numbers give you six additional distance options from just two extra swings.
When to Update Your Chart
Your distances aren't permanent. They shift with:
Seasonal fitness changes. Most golfers are longer in summer (warmer muscles, more frequent play) and shorter in early spring.
Swing changes. Lessons or mechanical adjustments alter launch conditions and distances. Re-map after major swing changes stabilize.
Equipment changes. New clubs, new ball, new shaft — any equipment change warrants a fresh chart.
Age. Gradual speed changes over years shift distances. Annual updates catch this before it causes chronic misclubbing.
A good rule: rebuild your chart at the start of each golf season and verify it mid-season.
